I’ve been researching the influence of Aeschylus and Eliot on the paintings of Francis Bacon today. The Eumenides (Furies) are prevalent. I see them in psychological terms - guilt, fear, our own personal demons. Bacon’s way of representing them as figural, colourless and horrifying conveys this. Another aspect of his approach to painting links into the themes of many of his literary influences - fate: his technique is to use accident, to give over control to fate and also to use control to balance it with his will. It is also an aspect of his personal philosophy.
All the research is buzzing around my head and I can’t sleep. Hence the time. Tommorrow, more research or time to do some experimental painting
